[ARCHIVED] Morgantown Fire Department Responds to Structure Fire on Park Street

Morgantown Fire Department Patch

At 12:17 a.m. on Sept. 2, the Morgantown Fire Department was alerted to a report of a structure fire at 125 Park Street, Apartment B, located in the South Park neighborhood of Morgantown.

The initial call stated that there was a fire in the bathroom of the residence. Occupants of the residence were advised by MECCA Operators to evacuate the building. Morgantown Fire Department, along with officers of the Morgantown Police Department responded to the call, with the first units arriving on scene within three minutes of the notification.

Upon investigation, firefighters discovered a fire in the light and fan unit in the bathroom. The fire, which was beginning to spread to the insulation and wooden structural members of the attic, was quickly extinguished. The attic area was then overhauled to check for fire extension. Fans were used to remove residual smoke from the building.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical short in the light and fan unit. Damage to the building was estimated to be $15,000. The structure is owned by Scott Batt of Morgantown.
