MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – Fourth of July celebrations are just days away and it’s important to remember your own safety and the laws the City of Morgantown has in place that keep those around you safe.
In 2016, West Virginia State Law changed to allow the sale of fireworks, the type of devices that leave the ground and are designed to produce visible or audible effects by combustion. Previously, only sparklers, toy caps, model rockets, and novelties were permitted to be purchased. Morgantown City Code, however, still prohibits people from using consumer fireworks in city limits.
“It’s against City Code to ignite consumer fireworks in the city,” said Morgantown Fire Chief Mark Caravasos. “This is done for the safety of our residents. Consumer fireworks are anything other than sparklers and novelties.”
Any person who violates the provision of the City Code dealing with fireworks can face a fine from $100.00 to $500.00.
