Entry-Level Police Officer Application

  1. Morgantown Police Department

    Provided below are requirements for applicants.

    AGE:  Must be at least 18 years of age.

    CITIZENSHIP:  Must be a citizen of the United States.

    RESIDENCE: Must reside within 1-hour drive time of the Morgantown Police Department.

    EDUCATION:  High School Diploma or GED.

    MANDATORY:  Successfully pass all of the following examinations.

    • Physical Agility Test
    • Written Police Skills Test
    • Background Investigation
    • Drug Testing
    • Medical Examinations
    • Vision Test (maximum uncorrected vision 20/40 one eye and 20/100 in the other eye, correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye)
    • Psychological Examinations
    • Personal Interview
    • Polygraph Examination
    • Civil Service Exam

    ALL APPLICANTS MUST have a valid Driver’s License or Government Issued Identification.

    Following your application, you will be required to complete a Civil Service Exam. Upcoming exam dates are as follows:

    Saturday, April 25, 2026
    Saturday, July 25, 2026
    Saturday, October 24, 2026

    All exams will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Morgantown Public Safety Building.

    There is a $25 Examination Fee that is due upon submission of the application. The application will not be processed until the examination fee is paid. Our online payment portal can be accessed via this link by choosing Morgantown/Police Examination Fees. Before submitting your application, you must pay the examination fee. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Morgantown City Clerk at 304-284-7434. Once you have paid your examination fee, please enter the last 6 digits of the transaction number from your payment confirmation below.

    This authority for collection of information must be signed by you giving the police department of the City of Morgantown permission to do a thorough background investigation with agencies such as the Medical and/or Mental Institutions, Law Enforcement Agencies, Credit Bureau, and other agencies which might be of concern for the completion of such investigation. This voluntary release form allows the police department to contact agencies for release of information and accurate documentation concerning your past status.

    Principal purpose(s) for which information is intended to be used:

    To obtain background information for personnel investigation and evaluate purposed in connection with the making of security determinations with respect to: (1) Employment with the City of Morgantown, particularly in sensitive civilian positions that have been designated as requiring a determination as to whether employment is or assignment to such positions is clearly consistent with the interests of public welfare, (2) Positions of police officer or firefighter or other sworn position, or (3) A position which as access to classified or protected information.

    The information will be used to determine your acceptability for employment with the City of Morgantown. The information will be principally used to determine your mental, medical and moral qualifications for employment with the City of Morgantown. If you are accepted and subsequently hired by a component of the City of Morgantown, this information will then become a part of your personnel record.
