MPD Shares Safety Message for Community Well-being

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - As the seasons begin to change, the City of Morgantown is coordinating efforts to embrace the events and opportunities that come with them. In collaboration with local organizations, city officials continuously plan for safe and welcoming community experiences.

The City of Morgantown also emphasizes the importance of community safety as a shared responsibility. Everyday acts of care, such as looking out for one another, respecting our neighbors, and following public safety guidelines and laws, are meaningful ways to support each other.

Morgantown Police Chief Eric Powell and Deputy Chief Chris Ruehmer encourage everyone to explore all the great things the city has to offer, but to do so responsibly, especially during gameday weekends when the city sees a significant increase in visitors.

“To prepare for the upcoming season and the influx of traffic and activity, it requires a substantial amount of training, briefing, and team effort on our part as emergency responders,” Powell said. “We work closely with West Virginia University Police Department, Morgantown Fire Department and Fire Marshal’s Office, Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, and other law enforcement agencies to ensure we’re providing the best services to keep our citizens safe.”

Training includes emergency response plans, special event safety protocols, and operational planning to ensure readiness and coordination.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of public safety teams and strong partnerships with local agencies and organizations, Morgantown continues to protect and serve its residents. From law enforcement to emergency responders, these groups share a common commitment to keeping neighborhoods safe and residents informed while promoting a culture of responsibility and care.

“It’s this spirit of partnership and pride that defines Morgantown,” said City Manager Jamie Miller. “We’re thrilled to welcome WVU students, their families and visitors to the City of Morgantown. The university, and the vibrant culture that comes with it, is a huge part of our community. We want residents and visitors alike to enjoy our incredible small businesses and restaurants, which truly showcase the heart of Morgantown. From our beautiful parks and scenic trails to our attractions, sporting events, entertainment, art walks, and events at the Ruby Amphitheater and Metropolitan Theatre, there are so many opportunities to experience.”

As city officials have shared, the City of Morgantown is promoting a season of respect and responsibility. The city's number one goal is to ensure that local communities remain safe, welcoming, and continue to be a wonderful place to live, learn, and visit.

The city also reminds citizens to stay hydrated during outdoor activities, drink responsibly, dispose of garbage properly, and report any suspicious or unsafe behavior. If you see something, say something.

“Gameday weekends bring a lot of excitement to Morgantown, and we want everyone to enjoy them safely,” said Deputy Chief Chris Ruehmer. “That means making responsible choices when it comes to alcohol, look out for your friends, and never drive under the influence. A safe celebration is one that doesn’t put yourself or others at risk.”

In the event of an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency issues, contact 304-599-6382. Additional safety information can be viewed by following the Morgantown Police Department on Facebook and Instagram or visit morgantownpd.com.

Additionally, the City of Morgantown invites residents to join the “Mountaineer Mission: Clean & Gold” community cleanup on Sunday, September 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the day after the WVU vs. Pitt football game. Volunteers will gather at Courthouse Square to check in, receive supplies, and select cleanup zones across downtown and surrounding areas. The event allows community members to show civic pride, connect with neighbors, and help beautify the city. Participants are encouraged to wear blue and gold.
