MFD Issues Independence Day Safety Message to the Community

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Morgantown Fire Department and the Office of the Fire Marshal are reminding residents to celebrate safely this Independence Day and to leave fireworks displays to the professionals.

The City of Morgantown will be hosting its annual free 4th of July Celebration at the Ruby Amphitheater, located at 185 Garrett Street Morgantown, WV on Friday, July 4th. The amphitheater, which is located at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park, will be open to the public at 5:00 p.m. with festivities beginning at 7:00 p.m. Officials encourage the public to attend this professionally managed event and avoid using consumer fireworks.

“Fireworks can cause serious injuries and start unintended fires, especially in densely populated neighborhoods,” said Andrew Dotson, Deputy Fire Marshal and Public Education Coordinator. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly.”

Consumer fireworks remain illegal to discharge within Morgantown city limits. Additionally, violators may be charged with misdemeanors and face fines.

Examples of fireworks prohibited in the city include:

  • Bottle rockets and skyrockets
  • Missile boxes
  • Helicopter and aerial spinners
  • Roman candles
  • Multi-aerial mine and shell devices
  • Aerial shell kits
  • Reloadable mortars
  • Firecrackers

Approximately 58% of injuries caused by mishandling fireworks include burns to hands, fingers, arms, and legs. Alcohol is the primary factor in many serious fireworks injuries, which serves as a reminder to never use fireworks while under the influence of any controlled substance.

The Fire Department urges residents to prioritize safety and attend sanctioned events instead of using fireworks at home. Stay safe, Morgantown!
