Morgantown Police Department Launches "Ride with a Recruiter" Program for Aspiring Law Enforcement Officers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Morgantown Police Department is announcing the roll out of its "Ride with a Recruiter" program, designed to encourage individuals interested in a career in law enforcement to apply.

Police Chief Eric Powell believes this initiative will provide a unique opportunity for participants to gain insight into the daily operations of the Morgantown Police Department (MPD) and explore a career path right here in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Participants in the program will have the chance to engage with MPD leadership, including Chief Eric Powell, Deputy Chief Chris Ruehmer, Captain Chad Reyes, and others. The program will allow aspiring officers to ask questions, experience various types of calls, and observe community engagement efforts by the department.

“We have an outstanding department, and we want to make it accessible to anyone who might be interested in a job in law enforcement,” said Powell. “This is a great way to learn and see what we do.”

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 18 years old and a citizen of the United States. Candidates seeking a position as a Morgantown police officer must possess a high school diploma or GED and maintain a permanent physical residence within one hour of the Morgantown Police Department.

Probationary officers will start at a competitive rate of $25.27 per hour, with an increase to $27.22 upon receiving certification. Additionally, a sign-on bonus of $5,000 will be awarded to all certified officers upon hiring.
