Morgantown Police Department Welcomes New Officers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Morgantown Police Department (MPD) welcomed two probationary officers, Ethan Clark and Ryan Wilson, who were officially sworn in during a City Council meeting on March 19, 2025. Both officers are currently undergoing training and are ready to serve and protect the citizens of Morgantown.

Chief of Police Eric Powell expressed his enthusiasm for the new additions to the department. “We're happy to welcome Officers Clark and Wilson to our team,” he said. “We know they will have a positive impact on our community, and their skillset will fit well with the residents of Morgantown."

Powell continued to share that the Morgantown Police Department is dedicated to promoting a safe environment for all and believes that these new officers will play an essential role in achieving that mission.

Officer Clark, a 2023 engineering graduate of West Virginia University (WVU), shared his excitement about joining the department. “I have always wanted to serve my community at the local level,” he said. “I want to focus on connecting with individuals who might have misconceptions about law enforcement and build the best rapport possible with our community members and visitors.”

Clark continued to say that while many situations require law enforcement to be firm, he hopes to showcase the department’s practice of treating everyone with respect and kindness. Clark is a former emergency medical technician.

Officer Wilson, who is currently a student at WVU, an active member of the West Virginia Army Nation Guard, and a volunteer assistant coach for the Morgantown High School lacrosse team, had similar remarks. “I learned early on that life is difficult for everyone in different ways,” he stated. “I decided to put myself in a position where I could help other people and use my communication skills to connect with the public.”

Wilson also serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Westover Volunteer Fire Department. As he explained, his focus on community drives his appreciation for the duties he has been assigned.

Deputy Chief Chris Ruehmer highlighted the importance of community-focused policing. “Officer Clark and Officer Wilson bring a strong desire to engage with the community,” he noted. “We look forward to seeing them develop as officers by building trust and relationships with the residents we serve and within the department.”
