Morgantown Fire Department Announces First Annual Awards

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The City of Morgantown and the Morgantown Fire Department (MFD) are pleased to announce the recipients of the inaugural Firefighter and Fire Officer of the Year awards.

Firefighter of the Year: Firefighter First Class Derek Porter
“Derek Porter has been selected as the Morgantown Fire Department’s 2024 Firefighter of the Year. Known for his unwavering commitment, he ensures that the department meets its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) needs as outlined by the State of West Virginia’s Office of Emergency Medical Services,” Fire Chief Gary Freshour said. “Porter is dedicated to mentoring new recruits throughout their apprenticeship programs and exemplifies a remarkable work ethic. He also played a crucial role in establishing the City of Morgantown’s first Safe Haven Baby Box, which became operational on April 15, 2024, at the Norwood Fire Station during its remodeling. The Morgantown Fire Department is proud to call Derek Porter one of our own.”

Fire Officer of the Year: Captain Jason Quinn 
“Captain Jason Quinn has been honored as the Morgantown Fire Department’s 2024 Fire Officer of the Year. Throughout a year marked by the transition of three Fire Chiefs, Quinn has upheld the highest standards of professionalism within the Fire Marshal’s Division,” Fire Chief Gary Freshour shared. “As a leader, he has consistently made critical decisions to promote safety within the community while balancing multiple roles, including Fire Officer, Code Official, Division Head, Law Enforcement Officer, Inspector, and Arson Investigator. Notably, Captain Quinn is in the process of securing one of West Virginia’s first arson canines. The City of Morgantown is extremely fortunate to have Jason Quinn serving as its Fire Marshal.”
