[ARCHIVED] Morgantown Fire Department Accepting Applications for Firefighter

The Morgantown Fire Department is accepting applications for placement on a competitive hiring list for entry level firefighter positions.

“Becoming a firefighter is a great responsibility with a rewarding outcome. Being a firefighter is more than just a career”, said Fire Chief Mark Caravasos. “We welcome people from all walks of life who want to join our team in protecting the residents of our community.”

Potential applicants can obtain an application from the Morgantown City Clerk’s office at 389 Spruce St., Morgantown, West Virginia or on the city’s website at morgantownwv.gov/jobs. Completed applications along with a $25 application fee must be returned to the City Clerk’s office no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 18. Applicants must have a verified physical fitness release form, included in the packet, completed by a physician and brought with them on the day of the agility test.

Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old on the date of the written examination. They must be a citizen of the United States for three years, possess a High School Diploma or GED Certificate, and a valid driver’s license.

Agility test open houses will be held at the Northside Fire Station on Sept. 21 and Oct. 19 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The agility test will take place on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Northside Fire Station.

Those who pass the agility test will receive a test booklet to study for the written Civil Service Exam. This test will be held on Nov. 25. The time and location for this exam is yet to be determined.

Applicants who pass both exams will be placed on an employment list, and upon movement in rank or retirement, will be called upon to move forward with the hiring process. Veterans will receive preference points under West Virginia Code §6-13-1.

If hired, candidates must establish and maintain a permanent residence within a 15-air mile radius of 228 South High St., Morgantown, West Virginia, after serving a one-year probationary period.
