At approximately 3:14 a.m. on January 21, 2019, officers of the Morgantown Police Department encountered a vehicle driving the wrong way on Chestnut Street, near Reid Street, nearly striking a marked Morgantown Police Department Cruiser head on.
An officer attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated as a passenger was getting out of the vehicle. The vehicle struck the passenger knocking him to the ground, not causing any serious injuries. The vehicle continued to accelerate and collided with a dumpster where it came to rest. The driver of the vehicle refused to comply with the instructions of the officers and had to be physically removed from the vehicle and following a brief struggle was taken into custody. The driver was found to be intoxicated at the time of the incident and the passenger ran from the area.
While conducting their investigation for Driving Under the Influence, officers found that the vehicle, a 2012 Kia Forte, had been stolen earlier in the day.
