Filling a Vacancy on City Council

Appointment of First Ward Council Member

On May 12, 2021, recently elected First Ward City Council Candidate Patrick Hathaway notified the City Clerk that he would not be able to fulfill his term. The City Charter, Section 2.06(c), requires City Council to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of his term (beginning July 1, 2021 and expiring June 30, 2023) within 30 days, or a special election will be held.

City Council will seek applicants for the vacancy and will interview some or all applicants in open public meetings. Based on the timeline laid out in the Charter, City Council plans to vote on an appointment at a July 27 special meeting.
