Course Description: 

This course takes a detailed look at the changes that recently occurred to the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) with respect to the major changes in the American Wood Preservation Association (AWPA) Book of Standards. The course will examine the impact the changes have to building codes and construction. The ability to enforce the changes will also be addressed.

Course Overview:

  • Misuse and misapplication of preservative treated wood products;
  • Overview of the AWPA Book of Standards as a "Reference Standard";
  • Detailed review of the 2016 AWPA UC-3 and UC-4 changes, and proper applications for ground contact and above ground treated wood products;
  • Definitions and review of critical components that make up an exterior structure;
  • Review of treated wood warranty updates in response to industry changes;
  • Review of the International Building Code and International Residential Code and how they address "Reference Standards";
  • What "Reference Standards" mean to Architects, Code Officials and Contractors;
  • Review of how "Industry Standards" are viewed with respect to adopted building codes, and the authority to enforce them;
  • Review of how "Evaluation Reports" are viewed with respect to the building codes and the authority to enforce their use;
  • The government's position on "Reference Standards" within building codes; and
  • NAHB's position on codes and standards.
