How do I donate, recycle, or dispose of...
Use this guide to learn about options for donating, recycling, or properly disposing of old items in usable condition that do not otherwise belong in curbside trash or recycling carts. Depending on the category, different options to donate, recycle or dispose are available.

When can appliances and household goods be donated?
- Appliances and electric household goods that are 10 years old or newer and in good working condition can be donated.
- Non-electric household goods can be donated if they are in good condition.
- Before donating or recycling, visit the organization's website for details on what all is accepted.

If Appliances are older than 10 years old or do not work than they can be recycled.

*Appliance Distribution Source offers free appliance recycling drop-off for washers, dryers, dishwashers, stove, water heaters, and appliances with Freon including A/C’s, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators. Please leave by dock ramp if after hours.
All batteries are accepted at MUB’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. You can find more information on that event on their website: https://mub.org/hhwc

If bikes are beyond repair than they can be recycled at scrap metal facilities.

A quick rule of thumb for clothing/textile donations: If an item is in good condition (no stains, holes, or tears) and is clean, it’s probably perfect for donation. Otherwise reuse old clothing/textiles for rags/craft projects, or discard in the trash.

IMPORTANT! Before recycling or donating electronics that may contain personal information do a factory reset to restore the device back to its original factory settings. Sim cards CANNOT be recycled. Sim cards should be removed from the device and destroyed.
Republic Services offers free pick-up of e-waste on the last Friday of every month to City of Morgantown residents with curbside recycling. Call 304-366-8900 or 1-800-696-3173 to schedule your free pick-up through Republic. Visit their website to see a full list of accepted electronics.

Oil vs. Latex Paint : Oil base paint is different than water based (latex, acrylic) paints and thus recycled/disposed of differently. Refer to each section for the best methods to dispose or recycle paint in Monongalia County.
Oil based paint:
Oil based paint cannot be recycled and is considered a HHHW.

Latex paint:
Water based paint is not considered a HHHW therefore is not accepted at MUB"S HHWC event.
When can latex paint be donated?
Latex paint can be donated if the paint is less than 5 years old and there is a half-gallon or more of paint in the canister.

How to dispose of latex paint:
Option 1 | Option 2 |
1. Open the can and let it air dry. | 1. Mix an absorbent (such as sawdust or kitty litter) with the paint. |

All major retail chains accept plastic bags and plastic films (i.e., bread bags and packaging wrap) if they pass the thumb stretch test.
To test whether flexible packaging can be recycled, apply thumb pressure to the plastic. If the plastic stretches then it can be recycled at major store retailers otherwise, the plastic should be discarded in the trash. Recycling bins are either outside in front of the store or by check-out stands.
Please do not put scrap metal in single stream recycling! Recycle scrap metal at the following businesses.

In partnership with the WV DEP, the City of Morgantown hosts monthly tire drop-off events to all WV residents starting in June 2023. The event will be on the second Saturday of every month from 8:00am to 12:00pm at the City Garage located at 200 M-Tec Drive. Residents can dispose of up to ten (10) tires at each event. This program is not open to businesses.
